I
earned my A.S. in Portraiture Photography and Desktop Media in October
2001 from the Ohio Institute of Photography. While there, I focused on
web and graphic design, fashion photography and photoethnography. My
passions were in documentary photography and photoethnogoraphy because
the stories they tell allow for a visceral and emotional response that I
feel connects us at an unspoken and universal level. I loved to
express someone's personality visually, and to tell a story without
words that allows the reader to interpret and percieve the meanings and
backgrounds in ways that connect with them. After seven great years in
the field, I decided to go back to school to pursue my Bachelors at The
University of Virginia.
In December 2009, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Old Dominion University with my Bachelors of Science in Women's Studies and English. While pursuing my undergraduate studies, I focused my research and emphasis on Gender and Globalization, Rhetorical/Visual Analysis of Gender Studies, New Media Studies and Creative Writing. My final undergraduate Capstone project consisted of the development of Phem: a magazine, website and blog that is dedicated to social justice and student and community activism. My dedication to the project caught the attention of staff and department members and through their support I was able to secure a grant to fund a printed version of the magazine. Producing the magazine allowed me to combine my background in photography and design with my passion for advocacy, community building and reporting/writing.
My undergraduate career also allowed me to take part in a service learning program in Cape Town, South Africa during the summer of 2009. During this month long immersion, I was exposed to various community organizations, non-profits and voluntary associations while pursuing my own work and specialized projects at Fezeka High School in Guguletu township. Being at Fezeka and working with those amazing students ultimately changed not only my outlook on youth education in an international setting, but also the direction of my future career and educational goals.
Currently,
I am planning to obtain my graduate teaching certificate in Women's
Studies while pursuing a M.S.Ed in Higher Education and Counseling for the Fall of 2012 to expand
upon my undergraduate experiences and interests.
My life and career goals are based within a commitment to local and global activism and I am dedicated to conscious raising activism that enlightens and complicates the thinking of our youth. I am passionate about creating a community that is conducive to the success, security and health of all girls and women. I strive to integrate a creative and constructive approach to every assignment I have that makes the most of my combined experience in art and design and activism and advocacy.
